Day 90: a ladybug

31.03.14: Francis from Pixars a Bug's Life, the most manly ladybug you will ever meet!! And who does not want a beer at the end of a Monday?

Day 89: a kiss

30.03.13: ... Okey, I have a three-year old who is currently hooked on The Little Mermaid and I like gangster... And nowhere is it written that gangster can't fall in love with mermaids!!! Makes sense now, right?!?

     Have a great week, everyone!

Day 88: a stalactite

29.03.14: I have to say I love the suggestion my wife come up with for this one:  why don't you thank yesterday's, turn it upside down and just say they are in Australia?!?

Unfortunately, I had already started the drawing and now it should Jon Pay and the father of Laura from yesterday's piece. And somewhere along the way (in all honestly, right from the get go...) it hit me that you can not draw stalagmites and/or stalactites without the other, so why should I draw two separate pieces? Now, I did draw them seperately but they were planned as one and should look like this:

     Have a great Saturday!!

Day 87: a stalagmite

28.03.13: will keep this short or else I'll start making excuses...

Stalagmite are those rocks pointing up. And yea, that is Gus and some Lara Croft wanna-be exploring a cave... But... Are they alone?!?

     Happy Friday!!

Day 86: the Empire State Building

27.03.14: ...what do you means it's possible to draw the Empire State Building without drawing King King?!?? That's just crazy talk!!

A little too much a slave to my reference but... And he's based on Kerchac, not any of the KK movies. And of course it is the 1930s Empire State Building, go figure...

Day 85: a Tiffany lamp

26.03.14: the Magpie (from day 18, 52 and 71) does not like getting snookered out of a sadrine-job, even at the cost of an expansive Tiffany lamp.

Yep, that is what I got from the topic a Tiffany lamp!?!??!

I need some help here, Doc Monster (or anyone else who may be farmiliar with the criminal stock of Cobb City): I've been looking at mugshots all night but I can not identify the two mugs Maggie is about to clock. Can you help?

Day 84: a picket fence

25.03.14: ...too ambitious?!?

I didn't feel like drawing a picket fence... So I drew a car having crashed through one... Yeah, that seemed easier...

Poor Farmer Joe! His newly painted picket fence has been ruined as a result of sergeant Linda O'Meillys car-chase. There were meant to be more apples on the tree (for some reason... Maybe it's an apple free or something...) but they kind of got lost over there...

Anyway, hope you liked it. Feel free to leave a comment if you did or if you didn't...

Day 82: a turkey leg

23.03.14: was asked if I just for once could keep it simple and just draw what the "thing" was, so I did. I went for a female turkey... So it just looks like some bird and not a turkey. Owe a tiny apology to Jenny from FreeBirds (which I have not seen. Any good? Anyone?) on the head design, but only a tiny one...

Anyone want a heads up on what I am drawing tomorrow?

Day 81: dance steps

22.03.14: little late...

A small "preview" from the story ("Prizefighters & Knickerbockers") that I wanna get back. It is one of the main reasons I started this challenge: get me drawing again so I could finish the work I've started a long time ago..

Anyway, featured here is Jack "Nice-Guy" Knightly, Gus MacDugal, Jon Pay and Coach. Hope you like it!

Day 80: weeds

21.03.14: "It was said that the spiteful rumors that she had brought upon her husband, the feared Lord Angelbeck's mysterious and bloody death, was what forced the Widow Angelbeck to her own grave. Dressed in her widow's weeds, in which she was she was buried, the deceased widow has been seen in the old graveyard, waiting to bestow on the responsible parties her revenge.
As the author of this narrative, I had not a single breath to be wasting on such an old lady's tale... Until the night I had the honor of making the frightful acquaintance of the late Ladyship..."

And that is why I am not a famous author of horror stories! But again the Widow is wearing her Widow's Weeds!

To make up for the above "narrative", I will include the latest double page spread.

     Have a great weekend everyone!

Day 79: a teapot

20.03.14: yes, I was gonna go with Mrs. Potts from Beauty & the Beast, but all of a sudden Japanese tea ceremony popped in to my head, followed by a certain samurai bunny popped in there. Just like day 77, I could not pass up the opportunity to pay a tiny tribute to the decades spanding, multi-winning, breath taking work of Sensei Stan Sakai and his Usagi Yonimbo. Just like a different bunny, it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going...and it simple keeps getting better and better!! Thank you, Sensei Sakai and please keep the stories coming!!

Also, a MAJOR apology to anyone who can read Japanese. My insult (and probably illegible) attempt at Japanese writing is just meant as a little fun for me!

Day 78: a glass of milk

19.03.14: this evening my wife expressed astonishment at my ability to complicate something as simple as a glass of milk... Does she not know me at all?!?!?!  She did emphasize that she meant it as a compliment, but still... If you ever get the chance, ask my good friend Doc Monster, how I get from A to B... HE knows the truth!!

Anyway, this is the Jon Pay version if the "Got Milk?" ads. Hope you like it and always remember; enjoy milk responsibly!!

Day 77: a bone

18.03.14: a tribute to Jeff Smith, and I am sure all the none-comic-book-readers just went "huh?!?!?" This is a book anybody and everybody would like. An amazing, multi-award-winning series.

I did justice to Smiley, but am a little off on Fone and quite a bit off Phoney, but can we say fun? Now I want to unpack the books and reread them AGAIN!!

Day 76: a dollar bill

17.03.14: one track mind - that is based on a dollar bill dated 1914... A bit of a rush job, so a threw in some pocket-change to make up the difference...

Day 75: a rainbow

16.03.14: apologies to my new homeland. If it is any excuse, it was a suggestion from my (real) Irish wife. I have all kinds of crazy ideas either featuring and elf, a pixie, a halfing and Pan's bastard son or a full special forces team ready to storm the end of the rainbow... My wife's suggestion was better!!

     Happy St.Patrick's Day!!

Day 74: mold

15.03.14: I admit it! I did interpret this one as I saw fit. Plus I gave me a perfect excuse to draw the Fox and the Wolf for the very first time. And for those of you paying close enough, all those typos are intentional. These two con artists are amazing at making the coin molds. They just don't spell too goodly...

And the late posting I blame the wife and she will concur.

Day 72: a mirage

13.03.14: yeah, another cliché but I works. Again, some Morris influences as I send Frankie crawling through the desert. And, hey, he is seeing a waterhole!! A waterhole... Get it a wate...never mind...

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Day 71: costume jewelry

12.03.14: yes, the Magpie is wearing half the Alphonse Mucha jewelry collection. I figured I'd have to comeback a little stronger and more creative after yesterday's post. And I got to draw some if my favorite characters. I did draw everything a little too far away and had to stop myself cropping it closer so the jewelry would be emphasized better.

Anyway, another one panel Jon Pay adventure!! Hope you like it!! Now I am gonna go have my Lemsip!!

Day 70: an ear of corn

11.03.14: don't know if this is closer to corn on a cob than to an ear of corn, and I also have to admit it is not my most creative one. I believe my defense would have to be; I still have a cold and I wanna get some sleep...

Monday, March 10, 2014

Day 69: brass knuckles

10.03.14: was extremely tempted to just draw a note stating: "check out Day 10. Good night!!" But I have to say I am glad I didn't. Yeah, this is a violent one but perspective was a bit of a challenge but I thought it worked out. What do you think?

I am now gonna go bundle up and attempt to sleep off this darn cold. Good night!

Sunday, March 9, 2014

Day 68: a mouth

09.03.14: drawn under the influence of Lemsip and Paddy whiskey, Ireland's best line of defence of a cold... Not sure it is helping... But as one of the smartest man I know always tells me: "of all the things that don't help, whiskey tastes the best!!"

It is suppose to be an attempt of a close up of Jon Pay's mouth although I may have gone a little too realistic. And it is suppose to be a regular cigarette he is biting down on!!

Hoping to feel better tomorrow but as tomorrow is Monday, I am not too optimistic... Here's to a good week!

Saturday, March 8, 2014

Day 67: a ship in a bottle

08.03.14: this is called "saving me from myself!!". My initial idea was to draw a classic looking pirate ship, in a storm within a bottle, where a full scale mutiny was taking place, fighting going on up the masts and on deck, and half the crew was raging war against the bottle and at least one canon blast breaking through the glass, water spilling on the table... But we are staying with family for the weekend, so I sank the ship and put a few crew-members on a raft...

     Have a great Saturday!!

Day 66: a tree limb

07.03.14: one of the oldest jokes in the book, but...

     Have a great weekend everybody!

Day 65: an anatomy chart

06.03.14: sfruggled with this one, but before you ask; yes it is based on an actual medical or anatomical chart from 1920. And yes, the female chart is wearing underwear... Come on!! They knew what common decency was in those days.

Apologies to Doc Monster for using his character...ehm... Doc Monster...

Day 64: a leopard

05.03.14: had never drawn a leopard before so instead of going cartoony or making a joke of it, I was a slave to my reference and just went for it. (And, yes, honey, that is giving myself a break!) I am quite happy with the result.

I haven't done a double page spread in a while and as the one I have just filled is quite interesting collection of styles and ideas, I figured I'd share. Kind if different, don't you think? Any favorites among the eight? Let me know.

Day 63: a sensitive cowboy

04.03.14: this was the only cowboy who would fit the bill!

This is a tip of the hat to one of the master I grew up reading, Morris and to Bello for introducing me to Lucky Luke at a very early age! Thank you!

Monday, March 3, 2014

Day 62: David Bowie

03.03.14:  finish the lines;

"You remind me of the babe!"

     "What babe?"

     "The babe with the power!"

     "What power?"

     "The power of voodoo!"

     "Who do?

     "You do!"

     "Do what?"

     "....     "

Okey, I never considered myself a caricaturist. What I usually do is look at a lot of picture of the person in question, find as many other caricatures of him/her that I can and try to create a character based on all of these. This time around I discovered and owe a HUGE tip of the hat to Ken Knafou (kenknafou.blogspot.ie) whose Bowie caricature just inspired me.

I was never a Bowie fan (love some of his work, but was never a fan... Sorry) but how can you not love The Labyrinth (1986... Now I feel old...), so that's why I went with Bowie the Goblin King!

     See you tomorrow!!

Day 61: a seagull

02.03.14: with this there was no choice but to go with my two favorite interpretations of seagulls; the seagulls from Pixars Finding Nemo and the pet of André Franquins Gaston Lagaffe (with apologies to both!). Any indications that I prefer one over the other is unintentional. There both engenius in there own way!!

(And yes, I managed to draw on my birthday!!)

Sunday, March 2, 2014

Day 60: a penguin

01.03.14: okey, so I was distracted while working on this and could have rendered it better but I still had fun!!!

And if you don't get, your too young (never watched American beer ads...) and would take too long to explain. But just for clearity, that's what phones used to look like!!

Day 59: Charlie Chaplin

28.02.14: Jon Pay questioning a "Little Tramp" (or as I would call him the Genius) on the street.
